Selling beds today is very different from just a few years back, and one of the most critical differences is the product mix designed to provide greater health and better sleep for consumers. The addition of highly engineered and carefully designed specialty sleep products as increments to innerspring mattresses allows retailers to draw in new customers and to offer these customers unique, better sleep solutions. The idea of “making room for air” has significantly more meaning now than it did in past years.

The idea of Comfortaire started over 20 years ago when Jimmy Orders, then executive vice president of the parent company, decided to develop a sleep surface that adjusted to the user rather than the more traditional approach of having the user adjust to the sleep surface. The quest for a better night’s rest resulted in the creation of the Comfortaire — the original air supported sleep system. The rest is history.

The decades of the ’70’s and ’80’s have proved to be an era for the creation and development of many new innovations in bedding technologies. This process began with waterbeds and then evolved into other early attempts at specialty bedding solutions. The modern air supported sleep system, as we know it today, was born out of this early period of design and creation.

Comfortaire was formed in 1981. Jimmy Orders was president. His vice president and general manager was Bob Walker. Bob later left Comfortaire, relocated to his home state of Minnesota, and founded a company named Select Comfort Corporation. Select Comfort elected to launch their product using a direct marketing campaign to sell their sleep system. Comfortaire, on the other hand, continued to invest in new technology and sell through its growing retail dealer network. Known throughout the industry as “the original air supported sleep system”, Comfortaire is and has always been dedicated to its mission of providing the individual with the finest quality, fully adjustable sleep products. Comfortaire has always been involved in innovation, defining and creating the benchmark in large measure for all other specialty airbed manufacturers to follow.
